自然数的产生：在人类社会发展的初期，人们还不会用数表示物体的多少，而是用一一对应的方法进行比较。例如，狩猎时常把武器和猎人一一搭配起来（一人一件）。

又如，放牧人早晨出来放羊，往往用石和羊一一对应的方法来检查羊的只数；晚上回来，再用同样的方法检查羊有没有丢失。人类经过长期的实践，才逐渐形成了“多”和“少”的概念。

随着生产的发展和交换的增多，人类在世世代代反复应用标准集合来表示多少的过程中，逐渐地把数从具体物体的集合中抽象出来。以后，随着文字的发展，在用刻线表示数据的基础上，逐渐创造了抽象的符号。
