原来，声音是否悦耳动听，与琴弦的长短有关。手指的上下移动，是在不断地改变琴弦的长度，使琴声高低起伏，抑扬顿挫。如果是三根弦同时发音，只有当它们的长度比是３：４：６时，发出的声音才是最和谐、最优美的。

后来，人们便把奇妙的３、４、６叫做“音乐数”。

音乐数最先是由希腊数学家毕达哥拉斯发现的。在古时候，人们也把音乐作为数学课程的一部分进行教学。
