Being good at communication is one of the most important skills for people in any field. Studies show that 85 percent of a person’s success is attributable to communication skills.

When you’re a blogger, communication is your number-one priority, but it’s surprising how many writers focus solely on the written word. Communication skills outside of your blog are also essential if you want to be a successful blogger.

Below are some suggestions for improving communication, both within your blogging platform and among your readers.

1. Use All the Resources

Because you work on the Internet, you have an arsenal of resources available to you. Look into communication tools that will make it easier to connect with your readers.

DialPad, for example, offers communication tools that make it easier to organize and categorize your conversations no matter where you’re working, which can keep you connected to your work and your fans no matter where you are.

Email, social media, chat platforms, video chat, and other tools can also keep the connection solid.

2. Automate Engagement

When you can automate a process, really do it. Automation is fairly easy with blogging since you can set a publication schedule to release content regularly for your audience. You can also come up with a series of automatic phrases and replies you can copy quickly to and paste into the comment section when you interact with readers.

It’s important to note that using automated replies is only appropriate when there’s no need for a more personalized response, however. If there’s an opening to make a deep, meaningful connection by composing a more thought-out response, take it.

3. Send a Newsletter

Many bloggers use a newsletter alongside their blog to update readers on advancements, exciting events, and other information that can be paired with the blog. A great newsletter generator tool is MailChimp, which gives you a wide selection of newsletter templates, then lets you track the effectiveness of each issue once it’s been created and sent.

4. Make Interpersonal Connections

Talk to your readers like they’re human. When someone reaches out to you or makes a particularly meaningful comment on your blog or social posts, talk back.

Connect over things you have in common and encourage further participation. The deeper the connection, the further the readership will go.

5. Talk with Followers Face to Face

An unconventional form of communication for bloggers is face-to-face communication. Readers are used to hearing from authors on social media, the blog comments section, and email, but a Skype chat or in-person meeting can show true dedication to your readers.

6. Reveal Personal Details

For security reasons, you should never get too personal online for the sake, but it can be good to divulge a few personal details to make you appear more human as the author of the blog. Your readers will respond better to your posts when they feel more relatable to them.

7. Offer Helpful Solutions

Most people read blogs because they have a problem to solve or a topic they feel particularly passionate about. When your blog offers solutions to any questions they have or deepens the conversation with useful suggestions and thoughts, you communicate with people in a real, non-fabricated way that makes them stick around.

8. Encourage Readers

Everyone can use a little encouragement now and again. If you already have a successful blog, you’ve managed to set yourself apart as an authority figure in a particular area. Encouragement from an expert means a lot to your readership.

9. Describe with the Five Senses

Success writing entails describing emotions and scenes in a way that your readers can relate to. Often, the secret is making them experience something in the same way you experienced it.

Instead of writing in abstract terms that have a broad potential of meanings, describe things using the five senses. See if you can incorporate each of the five senses into a blog post to communicate an experience more fully.

10. Tell Stories

Stories are one of the most powerful forms of communication we know. They activate the brain, make topics more interesting, and boost the power of persuasion.

Stories are relatable and often the best method for getting your points across. Whether you’re writing a new blog post or talking to an individual reader, find a way to bring stories into the equation.

Even bloggers with thousands of followers can further improve their communication skills. When you become a better communicator, you’ll build lasting connections with your readership and increase your reputation from good to great.
